In 1884, Herbert Charles Coulson, a carpenter, started in business as a builder, trading from premises in Burleigh Street, Cambridge. In 1889 he took a partner, William Lofts, and they traded as Coulson & Lofts from premises in East Road, with a town office at 37 St. Andrews Street.

On the death of the founder in 1921, the firm was incorporated as a private Limited Company with W.G. James, who had joined the firm in 1911, as Managing Director. He served until his death in 1962 when the company continued under the direction of his sons, John, Thomas, and Robert James.
