Waste Not.....
The Coulson Building Group has exceeded its own targets for waste management, with a validated recycle rate of nearly 90% for the last period. Waste has a massive impact on the environment and the Group has a dedicated policy and action plan to achieve waste reduction and embrace efficient re-use and recycling practices.
The construction industry generates 120 million tonnes of waste each year, much of which goes straight to landfill sites. All site waste generated by Coulson is monitored at point of disposal and segregated for maximum recycling.

Coulson Building Group's Glenda Matthews wins 'Construction Graduate of the Year' at the East of England Construction Training Awards
We are pleased to announce that Glenda Matthews, Group HR Co-ordinator, was on behalf of Coulson Building Group, awarded Construction Graduate of the Year Award at the East of England Construction Training Awards on Friday 10th October.
Our congratulations go to Glenda for representing the Company and taking first place against very strong competition from larger national contractors.
Wood Awards Shortlist
Coulson Joinery Ltd have been shortlisted for a Wood Awards in the Commercial and Public Access category for the Anglesey Abbey Visitor Centre in Lode, Cambridgeshire.
The project, as described by Richard Lambert of the British Woodworking Federation, features the use of Western Red Cedar cladding, as well as a Southern Yellow Pine external deck and European Oak internal fitting and screens.
New Intake of apprentices
A new intake of apprentices from schools and colleges throughout the Cambridge area have been welcomed to Coulson Building Group to maintain the Group’s century old tradition of training its staff on the job and offering structured and supported careers.
A total of four new recruits have signed up for apprenticeships across a wide range of building skills, including; carpentry, joinery, electrical and plumbing.
The Judge Business School - New Lecture Theatre
Coulson & Son Ltd have been appointed main contractor for the proposed new lecture theatre at the Judge Business School.
The project includes internal alterations to provide new tiered seating, acoustic panelling and extensive new services. The project is due to be completed in time for the new academic term.
Loyal staff retire after clocking up over 70 years
Two employees with over seventy years service between them have retired from Coulson Building Group.
Pam Hall retires after 38 years service, having started as a Bonus Clerk and risen through the ranks to become Group Administrator. Barry Scott, who retires after 35 years with the firm, was originally taken on as a plant fitter but has since worked as a lorry driver, digger driver and storeman.
Chris James, Chairman of Coulson Building Group, said that the Company had always been known for its long serving employees but he praised the couple's service as very special.
Coulson Small Works department have successfully completed the first project under the Cambridgeshire County Council's partnering contract.
Coulson Building Group's Small Works department were commissioned to carry out the refurbishment and alterations to the existing Youth Centre in Bottisham. The project, completed over the Easter holidays, provides upgraded facilities so that the building can be used as a Childrens Centre.
Coulson Construction has commenced enabling work on the proposed refurbishment of Talbot House sheltered housing scheme.
Cambridge City Council has a long-term strategy for the modernisation of its sheltered housing stock and this scheme is part of that programme of work.
The scheme converts the existing sheltered housing scheme into 19 self-contained flats with communal areas.
This the second sheltered housing scheme refurbishment that Coulson Building Group has partnered with Cambridge City Council, the other being the successful refurbishment of Rawlyn Court.
Coulson & Son Ltd appointed Cambridgeshire County Council partner.
Coulson & Son Ltd has been selected as a construction partner for a seven year partnering contract with Cambridgeshire County Council. The partnership gives Coulson the opportunity of providing added value to Cambridgeshire’s building programme.

Coulson Joinery Ltd awarded second project for Norwich Cathedral.
Following a national award for the quality of its joinery work at Norwich Cathedral in 2004, Coulson Joinery Ltd have been award the joinery work for the Cathedral’s new Visitor and Education Centre. The £750,000 contract value is for the manufacture of purpose – made joinery, including the supply of structural oak columns and roof props, external oak windows and louvers, oak ceiling panelling, doors and wall cladding. Working closely with the architect and main contractor the Coulson Joinery Team will help to develop the design through accurate and detailed AutoCad drawings.
Apprentice of the year awards
The high standards expected of Coulson Building Group apprentices were maintained when the Group’s 2007 Apprentices of the year awards were made. Chairman of the Group, Chris James, said that the quality and commitment of young trainees continued to impress the judges.
“The building industry is a good place for young people to be. The competition for places and the desire to achieve, is driving up standards year on year. We are delighted to be attracting such high calibre young people” he said.

“By making a commitment to attract young people into the building industry, we can make sure that we maintain a workforce of highly skilled, motivated young men and women,” said Stephen Terrell, the Group’s Managing Director.
“There are tremendous opportunities for young men and women wishing to enter the modern building industry, arguably there has never been a better time”, he added.
Investors in People Re-accreditation
Coulson Building Group has secured re-accreditation for Investors in People.
Stephen Terrell, Managing Director of the Group, said that IIP had complemented a wide range of existing good practice, including apprenticeships, health and safety programmes, customer care strategies and the Group’s partnering approach to contracting.
“We are delighted to have achieved this further recognition of our people policies, which confirms our commitment to building and maintaining a high quality workforce and a customer- centred philosophy”.
